Another thought about that "19 years ago" thing
Nineteen years ago this summer I was living alone in Boston and gearing up for my full practicum teaching semeseter. It was a very quiet summer--I was working two part-time jobs that were both very solitary and research-oriented. I had no friends (when I moved to Boston, I inherited friends from my BF at the time, so they went with him when we broke up in the spring), and I was in a relationship I wasn't thrilled with, but it wasn't a bad situation.

The only thing that caused me distress was a nagging backache in my lower back. It came out of nowhere and hurt a LOT, all the time. OTC pain meds usually didn't touch it. I kept going home for doctor's appointments. I was tested for endometriosis, colon cancer, polyps, ovarian cancer, and every other below-the-belt malady you can think of. All tests were negative. It went away on its own, eventually, once I finished my practicum and moved back home at the end of the fall semester. To this day I don't know what caused it.

So. Guess what I've got RIGHT NOW? x( It came on gradually before I went to California (I flipped the mattress--didn't help), went away for a while (I thought it was the mattress I was sleeping on in Cali), but then came back with a vengeance on the plane on Wednesday and has been excruciating ever since. No new shoes or anything else that might harm my back. I never have back problems--only 19 years ago and now.

I think I've got to do some major thinking and meditation to figure this one out, as moving home and letting mommy take care of me isn't an option this time. May I ask the Mighty Psychics of ASAH if they are picking up anything? I accept that it may be stress related, so if anybody feels that they can confirm (or refute) that, please let me know. Thanks. :hi:

1. this is an area where I turn to others...
starting with Louise Hay. She has found a lot of her clients with lower back pain had "fear of money. lack of financial support." That may, or may not, work for you. Given your current situ re: Mr. MG, maybe that is an unconscious consideration manifesting as back pain. Or not.

Other than that, given the level of pain you describe, I'd hie me to a cranial-sacral therapist or chiropracter to see if there is an alignment issue in the spine. Any pressing on a nerve could cause significant pain without being the sort of thing that regular MDs are trained to find.

4. Oh thank you, NL--I was hoping someone would mention that sort of connection
I had no idea what emotional/mental connection lower-back pain would have. Actually fear of money/lack of financial support is accurate in my case. We've spent nearly all the money for our home renovations, and due to extra expenses (the ones they always tell you to expect when working with a contractor), we won't have any left over for a load of firewood, Mr. MG's snow tires, or his vacation to Tennessee with his friend visiting from Brazil (scheduled for a week in September), let alone anything to set aside for a deposit on a new car in case my Jeep can't make it through the winter. I have informed Mr. MG of this and recommended he get crackin' again with his freelance work (which he hasn't done in several months), but if I push it too hard he gets really defensive, so I have to tread carefully.

I'm seeing my holistic m.d. in a little bit; I will ask her if she can recommend someone. Thanks again, NL.

2. chiropractor or accupunture to deal with the energy blocks in your
back and then someone knowledgeable to what those relate to so you can do the MIND work - maybe a kinseologist (sp) or some chiropractor that does kineseology (sp)

8. Any emotions related to the trip?
Honesly, long plane trips are really bad for aches and pains. We are up there getting radiated (thus are auras aren't exactly protecting us) PLUS sitting in the same position most of the time. There is a book by someone named Sarno, that people swear by, that deals with mostly emotional back pain. Caveat--I have not read it.

http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pain-Mind-Body-Connection/dp/0446392308

When I get back pain, I try just about everything. I find a balance of resting it and giving it exercise, doing ab strengthening (strength of stomach muscles has a lot to do with keeping the lower back healthy). Lately the sea mussel extract I bought has helped a moderate sacroiliac problem. It has helped me a lot more than the chiropractor, with the added bonus that my usually peeling fingernails are really, really strong. And yes, I have to be careful about the mattress.

You could try some EFT for specific emotions. Hope you feel better soon!!

10. Emotions related to the trip? OH yeah.
I enjoyed going and didn't want to come back--how's that? After all, in California I didn't have anything more taxing to do than paint my brother and SIL's bathroom (I volunteered, to repay them for their hospitality), but back home I have to deal with a messy house (what one man, left to his own devices, can do to a place in 10 days shouldn't happen to a dog), the return of the contractors, bills to pay, a tight deadline for my 2012 story, and back-to-school shopping for MG Jr. You know--life. ;) I think that's why the plane trip didn't bother me on the way out but did on the way back.

Thanks for the link to the book--I will check it out. This is just so weird, because this has only happened twice in my life--19 years ago and now...

16. in addition to weak abdominal muscles, tight hamstrings can contribute to lower back pain.
Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 08:56 AM by crikkett
so can constipation.

If your pain persists please see a doctor. some pain is a warning that shouldn't be ignored.

9. Oh dear MG............
You have my complete sympathies darlin'!! I think a spinal adjustment might be very beneficial....just a gut feeling! I'm seeing a Dr. this Mon. for the first time. He's going to look at my back ex rays and decide whether Phys. therapy, or surgery is the best route for me. (I'd rather get a referral to a Chiropractor) Some of them take Medicare, but you have to pay "up front" and be reimbursed. That's not going to be easy for me. I'm sending strong empathic healing light and prayer your way for the best outcome for you. Luv ya! JA

11. Aw, thanks JA

I appreciate the light and prayers. It's funny--since I started this thread, it's been hurting less! As always, y'all are good...! I'm still going to talk with my holistic doctor about it, though. I don't usually have back pain, and it's surprising how debilitating it can be.

12. first 'hit' was your kidneys...
and when you said stress I think it could be your adrenal glands...

I'll have to take some time and look up the herbs to help that area and the chinese energy correllations, but for now...
LOTS of water! flush it out!

cranberry juice can't hurt either :P

13. Thanks, sis
My adrenals are often abused, 'tis true. I'll have to start on the water tomorrow. Much Riesling tonight. (Okay, two glasses, but that's my limit before I do a faceplant where I'm standing and start to :boring:--I'm a very cheap date.)

14. I got a strange hit...a beach...a drum and sunny weather.
It was a flash of a beach scene and those items. No idea if that is of any significance or helpful.

15. We went to the beach when we were in California
My brother and his family live inland, but we always take a day and go to the beach, as MG Jr. LOOOVES it. I enjoy it as well, but I don't like getting a wet tushy when Jr. drags me in close to a tall wave that then breaks, soaking me, because I do NOT wear swimsuits. (I have compassion for my fellow beach-goers.)

Anyway, even though I'm not a person who longs for the beach at all times, I wouldn't doubt that I'd prefer to be there rather than here--hence maybe some tension I'm carrying?

Thanks, BI. Food for thought.

18. My psychic abilities are minute, but I can speak from a similar experience
A little over 2.5 yrs ago I had a similar experience. I had NEVER had any problems w/my back. I had found out about 20 yrs earlier that I had scoliosis when the chiropractor took standard first visit x-rays. It has never bothered me, so I didn't know I had it (though it does run in my family).

Fast forward 20 yrs. I began having sciatica problems in the Fall. Tried all the things that had worked in the past....stretching, pain relievers, heating pad, etc. Nothing was working.

I had had an extremely busy & difficult few years. I was teaching full-time, had just finished my Masters (while I taught--took 3 yrs), had 2 teens in high school w/busy schedules, had just finished w/a student teacher in my class (extra work for me), was teaching 2 new classes, was dept. head, lead club sponsor & had a mother 200 miles away who was having medical problems.

Had gone to the chiropractor (one of the best in the nation) & actually thought it had gotten worse after my visits. I was just trying to make it to Xmas break, thinking that getting off my feet & resting would take care of the situation. Then on Xmas Eve, my back went out. Horrible pain, long story short, I ended up having lumbar fusion surgery 3 weeks later. I was on pain meds for the entire time until the surgery, & could only lie in one position where I was not in excruciating pain, even on the meds. Needed help to bathroom & cried out in pain the entire trip.

As I look back now, there was/is so much symbolism in my experience. I was LITERALLY carrying the weight of too many others on my back & it broke!

NL, I'm not saying your situation is just like mine, but look at your life & what's been going on in it for the past few years. Is something weighing you down? I'm speaking metaphorically here. The lower back also holds the kidneys. Are you not filtering your emotions or feelings properly? Perhaps holding in anger? Just some ideas. I firmly believe that our physical ailments mirror what is happening in our lives.
Didn't mean to be so long winded, hope this helps & you get some relief soon. Sending you light & love.
