OK, people, who's with me? Who's gonna plant in February?!?!?!

I planted my first fall/early winter garden this year, and I was just enchanted by the taste of homegrown lettuce, arugula and baby collards in salad right through early December. That got me reading about winter gardening, and apparently, with plastic cover you can start really early with cold weather greens.

Considering I still have Brussel sprout plants growing in the light snow, I assume I can do the same on the other side of the bitter cold -- start BS, arugula, lettuce, spinach, and a few other things indoors in late December, and put them in the ground under plastic by February.

Anyone else wanna try?

4. I potted up the parsley and cilantro

and will try to keep them going through winter. I keep them in a window on really cold days, but since they are semi cold tolerant, I put them outside on days above freezing.

They seem healthy, but it's very clear just how much their metabolism slows down and how little foilage they produce in this winter light and cold.

Still baby coddling my peppers and tomatoes and have spinach and broccoli going....

Have been out after dark in the cold rain to rewrap my plastic protective sheets

held up with clothes pins ....

I just can't let go.......

3. The only thing still going outside is brussels sprouts

but a week or so ago, I planted a large indoor pot of cilantro, and they are beginning to sprout.

5. I have in the past, but I am not sure it is worth it to push the season too hard.

Stuff grows so slowly in the cold and seems more vulnerable to pests. The best luck I had was spring mix in containers on the protected patio in my little pop up greenhouse. I dunno, I will see how bad I am craving for fresh greens and how cold the winter is.

7. In in Ohio. But I'm going to try to plant early this year...

I tried a fall planting of snow peas. the plants loved it but the pods froze. I'm going to try putting winter spinach and lettuce in early. I hope around Feb 15th. Depending on the weather.

It's my first year . I've planted Brussel Sprouts , Cauliflower,
Brocoli, Garlic and various kinds of Onions. :shrug:

I live in zone 9 in the San Francisco Bay Area

we are pretty mild here .

9. We are going to start some of the pots inside next week.

We have the lights set up already and will be starting seed in the egg containers we have been collecting. We are hoping to extend our season with the container produce a little.

We are hoping they will handle the transition from inside to out in the spring since they will not need to be transplanted.

This year we are planning to do larger raised beds in addition to the containers.
