my transplanted asparagus came up!
I am so jazzed! My peonies are beginning to show and my rose bush that I planted last fall is showing green too! Of beauty day. I didn't really think the asparagus would make it. I've got a bunch of starts going and I'm almost dizzy from "it's spring."

1. Food for the Gods....Asparagus!
What part of the country are you in?

We planted last year.
Grew well over the Summer.
Clipped it back when it turned brown in the late Fall, and mulched with straw.
One new stalk has appeared a few days ago.
Anxiously awaiting for more.

We are in Central Arkansas.

2. we're in the northwest corner of Arkansas
the books all said it was difficult and usually would not transplant, but what a miracle, a few stalks on each of the three plants.

I let the ferns die completely back before I cut them off. I also thought it was about 7 years before you could harvest from newly planted asparagus, but I don't really know that to be true.

3. Hi, neighbor.
We almost bought in NW Arkansas, but couldn't pass up the deal we got here....almost in Oklahoma, Ouachita Mountains.

We planted crowns last Spring.
It grew like crazy last Summer, beautiful, ferny plants.

It was mostly trouble free.
No pests, no diseases....just watered & weeded from time to time, and watched it grow....beautiful plant.
I had never seen it grown before.

Most of what we've read says limited harvest on the 3rd year.
We're going to wait and see how many sprouts, and if plentiful, take a few.

4. pretty! I am so looking forward to my first summer
of gardening in the last several.

We looked in your area but decided we needed the tourist traffic in our area to take care of our business. This sure is a pretty little state. Where are you from? We moved here from the mountains of northern California.

5. I'm originally from New Orleans,
...but spent the 8 years prior to moving here in Minnesota where I met Starkraven living on a houseboat in the Mississippi River outside St Paul. She is from Montana.

We decided to move to The Woods and grow our own food in 2004...for a number of reasons.
We had several search parameters:
*Unspoiled area free from Industrial, Agricultural, or Urban pollutants
*LOW Property Taxes
*Inexpensive (cheap) land
*LOW cost of living
*Low Winter Heating costs
*Long Growing Season
*Fertile Land
*On Property Spring, but would settle for a year round clean river.
*Hilltop Location

We really, REALLY liked the Pacific North West (especially around Portland), but were priced out of that market.
After much research, we found this area which seemed to fill all our requirements.
We ran across this particular place on the Internet, checked it out, and bought it.
So far, so good.

6. well, I don't know about the low winter
heating costs, but the rest sounds true. I think food is outrageously expensive and am working like crazy to get the garden up and producing.

We too are on the top of the hill, with a spring and a great view with a great house. After we've been here a year or so, it will be a lot smoother, but it sure was costly to move.

7. I planted 100 crowns 2 years ago, so this will be our first harvest. We absolutely
could make a meal of just fresh steamed asparagus with salt, pepper and butter.

I hear it's also good for "casting". (I'm SERIES!!1!)

9. Sorry for the unclear reference----certain tea-bagger type folks sometimes have problems with
their vocabulary.

"I'm serious!" becomes I'm series!!11!

"This is HUGE!" becomes This is Hugh!

"Casting aspersions" becomes---(drumroll)---casting asparagus.
