2011: Year of the Tomato and Zinnia

All this snow has me longing for gardening weather. Turns out, the 2011 veggie and flower of the the year (according to the National Garden Bureau) are two of my favorites!

I want to plant everything in the book. Every day, I sit with that catalog and I am enchanted just reading about the food. They have seeds from a beet strain that is over 1000 years old. (no picture of that)

I found where they are having an open house in March, so guess where I'm going!

The grew really well from seed. I'll probably plant again this year.

4. I'm going to try and grow more flowers from seed this year, but my local nursery

makes it hard when they offer such a gorgeous selection of organically grown blooms at $1.25 for a six-pack (even cheaper if you buy a whole flat AND they allow the flat to be mix-n-match.)

Still, it is awfully satisfying to look at an enormous plant and say "I remember when you were just a tiny speck of a seed."
