i have some three year old seeds
should I try to sprout them first, are they dead, or just plant them heavy and see what comes up?

3. I would plant them individually as seedlings...
and usually most will grow...not as many as first year, but it is sure worth a try. Or...as I did this year already is just throw them in along side the chicken coop and see what happens...chickens might just love them..ha! Did you get chickens? I think i saw that you were thinking about it last year. i do not have any yet, but plan to get some baby girls this spring.

7. You'll probably get 30% germination minimum0depending on the variety
Supposedly, horticulturalists have sprouted 2500 year old seed grain taken from a pharoah's tomb.

8. My three year old tomato seeds did great.
The peppers were a no go. A friend of mine is starting peppers from new seeds, so I am going to trade her some tomato seedlings, which I will definitely have too many of, for a few nice pepper plant. The kids and dh like sweet peppers better than tomatoes anyway.
