I got a winesap tree at Big Lots!
I was at Big Lots this morning for a couple of things, and I saw that they had trees out front. So, after we were done, my son and I wandered over to take a look. They had redbuds, which I've been considering for the front yard, and then I saw they had fruit trees. Some of the pear varieties were heirloom, even, and then I saw they had Gala apple trees. I started digging through and found a winesap tree! For $13.50!! I found an even healthier looking one at the very back and went back in and bought it.

Winesaps are my very favorite apples. Even if this is a Turley (not from the picture, but who knows), I'll take it. I just hope it'll do okay in our yard. Hubby and I are going to start planning out everything we're doing this spring (cutting back some bushes, replacing pricker bushes with blueberries, putting in some square foot gardening plots, and now planting this tree) tomorrow by walking around the yard and measuring it all.

I remember my dad saying that, after putting in his small orchard, it didn't matter where you bought fruit trees. He bought some at Meijers and Franks and others from fancy tree places, and the best ones ended up coming from Meijers. I'm hoping I'll have good luck with this one. :)

1. how cool!!
I have a little apple tree outside. it's no bigger than I am but I got 8 beautiful apples off it last year

:bounce:

I have no idea what kind of apples they are, they were firm with a tart undertone, pink and yellow as far as the fruit looked, maybe a Cameo but great flavor
