OK, this morning I planted more radish (3rd sowing), lettuce (2nd round) and

dwarf marigolds in front of the tomatoes

drug out some left over field fencing to use around the garden tub for peas to climb and to make tomato cages, and started weeding the asparagus bed

my first batch of radish (planted March 5th) have two sets of adult leaves and look like they'll be ready to harvest in the next week or two at the most.

I think I'm liking this gardening stuff. I'll post pics of the first radish when I harvest and you'll see how it's going

1. How tall's that fencing you're using for the peas?

I think I know where there's some old woven fencing I could pull out of the weeds if its not rusted up too bad. I thought it would be a little short for peas. I was going to try to find a length of road-mesh (6" square welded wire used for concrete reinforcement) if I could find some. My peas have just started comming up so I need to come up with something soon.

I'm just going to put a piece up that covers and supports so the peas don't pull down my deck :rofl: the fencing is 42" high, but I'm going to send it up lengthwise

here's what I'm talking about, the peas are coming up on the edge of the tub closest to the steps and the corner of the deck

I have removed the chicken wire now, I'll take pics when I get the fence cut and stapled into place

4. I'm gonna try the cukes up a sunflower behind the corn

they'll get good morning light but be shaded in the hottest part of the afternoon that way.

I've read in several blogs that cukes LOVE to grow up sunflower stalks

5. Yup, it's true. Last year I had sunflowers out the wazoo

and the cucumbers took off up those stalks like crazy. The sunflowers didn't mind a bit.

my poor broccoli got hurt in the wind storm yesterday, I mounded some dirt around em and said a little prayer

the eggplant and lil carrots are ok tho and that's my yellow pear tomato on the right

we got lettuce (how do I even begin to thin that??)

and radish, some 5 weeks old, some 3 weeks and some 1 week

my peas are happy

and now they have a wire ladder to climb

my apple tree lost a bunch of flowers in the wind yesterday

think I'll still get fruit out of this?

that had sand and stuff in it so you could see where you were sowing and I poured a small envelope of old butter lettuce seeds since the first ones didn't sprout

I didn't pour that much down either

sigh

how do i thin em?? now? or later?

i'm so confused LOL

I would guess better sooner than later so you don't end up pulling up more than you want to, which I think will happen if they get bigger.

12. I read to use a hand held rake, and gently rake over the area that you want

thinned out. The rake will do the thinning for you.

13. Ok, I couldn't bring myself to rake them

but I have some random piece of metal out there that's about 4"x2"x really thin (1/8" maybe) so I used it to gently carve out 1" squares

15. I didn't start seeds I just tossed em in the ground BUT

my plan was to do it in eggcartons and figured to transplant the whole 'egg' figuring that the transplant shock would take care of the thinning :rofl:
