I just got into Grad School

I will be attending Kent State University in Library and Information Science starting this fall. I have spent a year out of college, and I honestly can't wait for classes to start again.

I am staying safely in Columbus, where they have a branch program. The National Guard can look all they want, but they'll find nothing but a skeptical phantom...

I live in Columbus as well, and my wife has started to attend these meetings. She really likes it, although I've only made it to a couple sunday brunch meetings.

We need skeptics and freethinkers on the frontlines, and libraries tend to attract IDiots and fundies looking to defend their beliefs by making sure people don't read something objectionable.

on whether I want to work in an academic library, public library, or school library. The latter two would be better for that, but i really like academic settings.

I'm in the same boat with you - I've been out of school for about two years and am super-psyched about classes starting this fall.

but it was nice to have a goal. I've been grinding this last year, just paying the bills, and not getting ahead. It'll be great to be able to feel like i'm improving myself

I can't even begin to imagine how those courses have changed over the last couple of decades. From card catalogs to the Internet - how much material in those classes today wasn't even conceivable in the 80s?

so much of library work is AV and technology focused now, beyond anything we could have imagined back in the Olden Days of the 20th Century

First of all, I have been gainfully employed in my field since 1992. I now make a very generous salary as a special librarian. In anticipation of the usual stupid questions you will be asked like, "Oh, you need a degree to check out books?"...I spend a lot of time with the administrative side of databases and doing technical stuff. I never have a boring day, although I have had some "interesting" days, especially when I was a public librarian.

without being an actual librarian. I spent three years working for the Ohio State University Libraries while I was an undergrad, and I got one of my recommendations from the curator of rare books, where I worked. I'll definitely join!
