I think what this radio host did was indefensible, but you know that the woos will be coming out in force to show this as part of the Big Pharma conspiracy.

I'm not going to get involved though. I'll just get accused of being a shill. As a told someone else who threw the Big Pharma stuff at me here, I'm not god and I can't stop the bad guys in my industry who give all of us hard working and upright folks a bad name.
FWIW...yesterday I went to a meeting that talked about how my company is going to be putting in the most stringent rules on handling human biological products (in terms of hipaa requirements and other ethical standards) on the market today. So some companies are TRYING to do the right thing. But you'll never hear about that here.

While I'm decorating, I've been moving books out of the way, so of course I can't resist dusting a few off and reading them. Yesterday I read an old Alfred Bester short story about a man who conducts a short-lived and doomed telephone romance with a woman who turns out to be living in an alternate timeline: somehow the wires got crossed, allowing communication between the different worlds. Perhaps that's what's going on with our crank friend?

I informed a coworker with epilepsy that I read on the inter-tubes that if she just created her own reality and had lots of positive thoughts she wouldn't need to take all those meds and wear sunglasses (often triggered by sunlight). Clearly she enjoys suffering and supporting evil big pharma because she just glared at me.

I'll believe their claims when I see them tested, and a test would be very simple.

Anyone believing that should just go to the top of a very tall building and jump. They should have plenty of time to re-arrange their reality before they hit the ground.

Definitely a win-win situation. If they escape unharmed, they have completely rewritten the laws of science and physics as we know them. And if they don't...well, it's still a win.

My wife is a psychiatrist and we have had many discussions about this topic. The guy in this article is an internationally renowned psychiatrist on big pharmas payroll. And if you look at how the field of psychiatry is so dominated by the medical model, i.e. all mental illness can be treated with a pill, then you might suspect a conspiracy. A conspiracy to make loads of money. The DSM is written by docs who are on big pharmas payroll and the next volume seems make diagnosis easier and treatment with meds the standard.

As an example, you work in a shit job, you hate your life, you feel depressed. As an escape you drink too much, you get in arguments with your wife. What do you need? Current psych, certainly as practiced in any HMO, would prescribe meds and very infrequent if at all therapy. Make sense?

How about little kids getting treated with multiple meds, some of which have life long consequences, for ADHD or bipolar disorder. Anti-psychotics for kids?! Perhaps in some cases, but when you have drug reps in your office giving you lunch or taking you out to dinner, how do you think the average doc will respond? Throw in a few paid lectures, for you and your spouse to a sunny 5 star hotel all expenses paid to talk on behalf of this drug or that. Conflict of interest? Drug whore maybe?

I agree the woo woos will fly with this, but there is a real problem in medicine with big pharma and psychiatry is probably the foremost battleground.

As I understand it, the serotonin model of depression is slowly but surely being supplanted by a more nuanced information processing model. Which makes sense to me. Serotonin is such a broad ranging messenger in the brain that it seems overly simplistic that low levels of serotonin should be the singular cause of clinical depression. Instead, lowered serotonin levels in the brain might be a symptom of poor information processing strategies. Furthermore, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy seems to do pretty well in treating depression in conjunction with SRIs over treatment with just SRIs alone. Since CBT seeks to help the patient identify and change patterns of thought that lead to depression (and other psychiatric illnesses) that would also seem to indicate that depression is an outcome of poor information processing strategies and increasing serotonin levels with SRIs aids the patient in forming new strategies (perhaps by facilitating synaptic plasticity).

Anyway, you know I'm just a layperson with an interest, and some long ago training in the field, so please correct me if my impressions are wrong.
