It immediately tells me they have no grasp of statistics (certainly not standard deviations or z-scores), or IQ testing. By my back of the envelope calculations there should at most three people alive in the U.S. right this day who have an IQ of 180. I'm pretty darn confident that person isn't one of them. About 99.999999% confident in fact.

He isn't a person. He's an alien. Freaking DUH! How many *aliens* in the U.S. today have IQs of 180? Huh, bub??!? I'd wager a guess that it's ALL OF THEM, so suck on that 100% stat you pitiful human! :P

*Children* could conceivably get that sort of IQ on the old Stanford Binet, which used the method of dividing mental age by chronological age. But most tests now use the normal distribution, with an IQ of 100 representing the mean, and 15 points for every standard deviation above or below the mean (e.g. one standard deviation above = IQ 115; one standard deviation below = 85. They simply do not allow for IQ scores of 180 (5.33 standard deviations above the mean).

Thus anyone, especially an adult, who has genuinely obtained an IQ of 180, must have been using a dubious test; very possibly one on the Internet which had never undergone standardization.

That's where I got my 8 nines number from. It's ridiculous to assume any IQ tests are reliable enough to measure out beyond the 5th SD.

I asked our alien friend what he thought the statistical probability of there being anyone with a 180 IQ among DU's ~151,000 registered users but alas the thread was locked before he could demonstrate his ignorance
