Seems like we see a lot of these used by people defending their latest wack-a-loon theories. Best to be prepared!

3. Curse you, semillama
I had never been to Cracked before. I spent the entire evening reading articles over there, and I'm not done yet. :hi:

4. I know. I remember it as a mediocre knock-off of MAD Magazine
and now it's one of the funniest websites in existence. Go figure.

6. Love it! Painful to read, but I love it!
The only thing I'd add, from my experiences at DU, is the person who makes all kinds of claims and who, when asked for documentation, replies "hey, look it up for yourself, if you're so interested."

I don't have a clever name for this kind of debater, though I usually think "stupid asshole" when confronted by one of them.

7. I just remembered another tactic
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 10:06 AM by Orrex
It's a variation on technique #1 Winning By Losing, in which the claimant asserts, after lengthy and involved debate, that the issue doesn't really matter to them anyway.

The intent is to make the opponent look ridiculous by being over-invested in the discussion, while the claimant is (allegedly) able to maintain a cool demeanor and argue from a position of pure, rational reflection.
