The Mayans foresaw the Gulf oil spill!
Which is why they predicted that the world will end in 2012. As it will do, because this oil spill is going to kill everybody.

I saw that one and didn't dare touch it with a ten foot pole. I wanted to point out, but didn't, that the OP had regressed to the intellectual level of a stone age human where supernatural answers are given to natural questions. I also wanted to point out to the OP that what she is suggesting is a scenario where things are pre-ordained by some arbitrary ancient society's beliefs. With that fatalist mindset, why pass improved environmental laws or attempt to hold anyone responsible? We're all going to die anyway...

5. What's funny is that the same long-count calendar is based on...
...the world being created on a fair August day in the 32nd century BC. Of course laconicsibling, being a "spiritual but not religious" militant agnostic, maintains that even though its based on fairy tales, we can't know what will happen on 12/21/2012.
