Poll question: Favorite thing to do in FPS games:
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 01:37 AM by Mayberry Machiavelli

Actually, when available, one of my favorite things is to use silenced weapons, but I've not seen where this is useful in multiplayer online FPS as opposed to single player.

1. Other...
I like to see if the developers guarded against people breaking the main story.

This, of course, means trying to kill the people the game tells you you're trying to help- by any means possible.

Morrowind, as I recall, had that possibility built-in. Since you could kill important NPCs in that game, they decided to make it so doing so placed you on a sort of back-path to the main quest. This often required fulfilling obscure goals that took a great deal of effort, but offered (occasionally) the option of becoming a vampire.

IF I recall correctly. Yes, I'm a geek.

:)

14. I think that if you killed an NPC central to the storyline ...
you got a message like 'the thread has been broken' and though you could continue playing you couldn't solve the main quest. I could be wrong about the second part though, because I never actually tried to finish the game after that. I, like you, did appreciate that you could off EVERYONE in the game and after finishing the main quests would see just who and how many could be killed.

2. Snipe
I'm happiest with my sniper rifle where I can just start killing with no one realizing what's going on or why they're dropping like flies.

Failing that, tactical nuke.

3. depends on the job, ...
pick your tools for the job, I always found Ghost Recon was good for silenced weapons because you couldn't tell where the bullets came from, (only if you re totally hardcore and switch the HUD off).

My favourite for upclose and personal is a shotgun & grenades. For mid-range I prefer accurate high caliber single shot rifles like Lee-Enfield, M1 or Moisin-Nagant. Long range Sniper rifle or a automatic weapon.

6. Yeah I thought about a "silenced weapons" option too, since they are
among my favorites when available. Silenced pistol in No One Lives Forever was great.

I played through all of Far Cry and never really used the silenced MP5, but on playing through levels, it's just about my favorite tool. The AI response is much different when they can't triangulate your muzzle sounds.

In Ghost Recon, does using silenced weapons actually help in MULTIPLAYER at all? Or in any other multiplayer online game?

13. if you have a HUD display - no
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 04:36 PM by TheBaldyMan
there is a circular 'radar' gizmo that looks a bit like a simon console and flashes in the general direction you have been fired upon from. It has a central circle that flashes if the firer is within 50 metres.

Switch it off and you only have the stereo sound to gauge where the bullets are coming from as well as visual muzzle flashes. It's spooky when you here the zing/crack of small arms fire then the bang from the gun. If it's a zing it's medium to long range, if it's a crack then the bad guys are too close.

With the MP5-SD there is no muzzle flash and the bullets make a whispering or hissing sound. It's almost impossible to determine where they are coming from. Then it becomes a matter of visual aquisition, totally hardcore and murderous fun. Watch as players panic and fire blindly in all directions. You are almost guaranteed a few blue on blue.

on edit : I haven't played GR2 yet.

4. The sniper rifle in Farcry was excellent.....
I'm really liking the HV Penetrator in FEAR lately.

Just something about spiking a dude to the wall

7. I think Far Cry's sniper rifle is probably the best I can think of so far
in shooter games, although the QII rail gun and HL crossbow would be up there. Amazing how much difference in the implementation of sniper rifle in different games. For sheer impressive visual effect, the Type 7 Particle Weapon in FEAR is awesome too (if you've gotten to that part of the game yet) but it doesn't have adjustable zoom on the scope.

HV Penetrator is pretty cool. First time I really started to use it, I was like, "what's that coming out of the guy's eye socket" ... "Oh."

8. Two things
SP:
Raping Bots in BF Desert Combat
The Al Alamein map is really good for doing this in co-op mode (64 player). It's fun to see how many I can take out before the tickets run out.

MP:
Killing bunnyhoppers. God how I hate them.

10. Ha ha...
I thought I was the only person who did the El Al bot beat-down. One of my favorite methods of slaughter is to park an Apache or Hind out on the roof of the the center flag and just have at it from the gunners seat. Ahh... good times. :freak:

12. Oh damn!
That's a maneuver I never would have thought of!

Which makes sense because the bot AI is hardly conducive to the gunners position of the Apache.

I'm gunna have to try that one!

11. Went with nades...
... only because I love throwing people's nades back at them. The ability to do this may be exclusive to Day of Defeat but it's so much funner (and more humiliating to the victim :)) than a melee kill.

It's not as simple as it sounds though... most players prime their nades but not all the time for various reasons depending on the situation... sometimes you can just judge whether a nade has been primed... then you have to find it, then pick it up, and then finally release.

15. I don't know ... few things beat whacking a sniper with a shovel

However, one thing that does beat it ... stopping a 2-person objective cap by going out and whacking BOTH guys with the shovel! :) Anvil is a great map for that, since the cap points are really close to the buildings and you cap pop out and swing away. The tank cap points in Hobofire are excellent places to get hand-to-hand kills as well. The key on either map is circling back behind them and *whack whack whack* ... especially on Cranbarry's 88.
