need a good FPS for a not-gaming-oriented computer
so I got this computer instead of one with better graphics, video, sound, etc cards thinking it'd be better for school, and have come to realize that, really, you don't need much more than a keyboard and a couple programs for school stuff.

anyway, I've gotten some PC games, but the newer ones need all this chipset stuff I've never heard about and don't work right on my computer, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any FPS--probably from a couple years ago--that are good to play but without insanely advanced graphics and such.

1. You didn't post your specs....
so it's hard to know just how lame your on-board graphics card is. ;)

Doom 3 is optimized to play on most systems, and there are many others of course, but if you can think of a game you want, go here:

http://www.srtest.com/referrer/srtest

This will tell you if your rig can run it.

2. You could prolly run the original Half Life
or maybe even 2 if you posted your specs. Go to 'my computer', right click and hold, select 'properties'.

Tell us what you got.

3. Half Life,Red Faction, possibly the first Serious Sam (which is insanely fun).
If you really are running an older system see if you can track down System Shock 2,one of the best ever.

8. I second the System Shock 2 recomendation
The first Deus Ex and the first two Thief games are also great if you can find them (although Thief is not really a First Person Shooter, it is more of a first person stealth game).

7. You can do Half-Life 2. I HIGHLY recomend it
There won't be a single one of the gamers here who tells you otherwise!

Required: 1.2 GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, DirectX 9.0c or higher (included), Internet connection (broadband or better recommended.)

Invest in a gig or two of SD ram, you can swap them out on a new machine too when you upgrade.
