Poll question: Survival Horror Fans: Resident Evil or Silent Hill?
Which series do you like better? I used to prefer Silent Hill but I didn't care much for The Room. Resident Evil, on the other hand, has remained strong throughout it's entire run, not counting the stupid Survivor games. So, which series is better?

1. As far as scares go, I pick Silent Hill
Even though all the games in the series were unbearably easy to beat.

2. Yep, definitely the more disturbing of the two

Silent Hill takes you into a truly demented universe while Resident Evil is more like playing a graphic comic book. Still, RE has great storylines and good gameplay.

7. I second that.
I first played RE with my best friend a few years ago and it was scary fun. BUT, than I tried SH. The game was just downright creepy. That was the difference for me. RE was more of a shock value scare, while SH was a bit of the opposite. It was ambient, slow buildup to get your heart racing kind of dread and than POW! You're fighting for your life! Not to say that RE didn't have you fighting for your life either, but I did appreciate the atmospehere better for SH. Creepy fun! :7

3. Hmm
That's tough but I think Silent Hill gets the edge because it's more psychological horror and I love that.

4. I think Eternal Darkness was better than both of them.
That's probably heresy, but I'm not ashamed to say it. The thing is, Resident Evil & Silent Hill are apples and oranges...Resident Evil is a campy homage to Romero zombie flicks, and the first one worked wonderfully well as that. We'll have to agree to disagree on the "strongness" of RE's run; similar to a situation with another certain other genre-inventing game of theirs, Capcom went to the well one too many times and gleefully drained it dry until the series spiralled into a complete and utter parody of itself, and people the world over ceased to care (it's no coincidence that, like this certain other game, RE also made an abysmally foul movie that had little to do with the actual game). I mean, not even the biggest RE fan I know, my boyfriend, can defend a game like Code: Veronica X with a straight face. IMO, Devil May Cry (which started its development as a Resident Evil game IIRC) was a far better Resident Evil game than any of the Resident Evil sequels. (As an aside, it was also a better Castlevania game than anything since Symphony of the Night :P) Then again, DMC is another series that has probably jumped the proverbial shark. Goddamn you Capcom, why can't you quit while you're ahead?! Oh, and don't get me started on that asinine, counter-intuitive control scheme. It'd be a lot more fun to shoot the zombies if, you know, I could point my gun at them without running into the walls because pressing up makes Jill go backwards. Just...ugh.

I will admit to being completely "meh" on the Silent Hill games. They are on the whole less visceral than RE and focus on the psychological horror. The two series take vastly different approaches to the idea of "survival horror". Silent Hill made me feel like I was watching a Japanese horror film, and I'm not really a fan of those, so it never appealed to me. It just wasn't fun to me; it just felt really pretentious and I could never put my finger on why, exactly.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was a beautifully crafted love letter to H.P. Lovecraft fans, and since I'm one, I adored it. The sanity system, which could have been a stupid gimmick in the hands of, say, Capcom, added a dimension of freaky "wtf-ness" to the game that was genuinely creepy and fun. Not to spoil it if you haven't played it, but the hidden "real" ending of the game that you get if you play through all three possible paths is probably the most fucked up ending I've seen in a game, and I mean that in a good, "shit I can't believe they had the cajones to go there" kind of way. It was awesome.

This game is tragically underrated. I hope there will be sequels but I don't think that's too likely since I don't think Silicon Knights is developing for the Cube anymore. :(

6. Yep, we'll have to disagree

'cause Code Veronica X kicked ass! Since I don't own a Gamecube I have only briefly played the RE 1 remake, which seriously impressed me, and have never played zero. But CVX was the best one in the series up to that point. Eternal Darkness is supposed to be a great game though. And I am also a Lovecraft fan, so if I ever get the chance, I'll check it out.

5. all of you RE doubters
Buy the remake of Resident Evil 1 for the Gamecube, then get back with me.

Puts everything else to shame.
