How"new freedom" Is going to be paid for
Even consumer credit companies rarely go after homes for, say, an unpaid appliance bill, Cochran notes; they may file a lien if they can't work out a payment plan. As a not-for-profit, Yale-New Haven should be more careful, not less, to avoid exacerbating the woes of people on hard times, he argues. "It's a terrible thing for a medical provider to be taking someone's house because they can't pay a bill," he says.
Amie would soon tell her story to other people, too. Including the staff of Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. She'd prepare an affidavit for a lawsuit Blumenthal has brought against Yale-New Haven for its predatory treatment of poor patients. The suit accuses the hospital of hoarding $37 million in donations designed to pay for poor people's bills, profiting from the interest. (Yale-New Haven vehemently denies the accusations.)

Are Debtor Prisons Returning To America?*

Some hospitals now rank among America’s most aggressive debt-collectors. Some also use one of the harshest and least-known collections tactics of all: seeking the arrest of no-show debtors.

Hospitals in several states have secured the arrest and even jailing of patients who miss court hearings on their debts. This legal tactic is chillingly known in some areas as “Body Attachment.”

More..

Under current federal law and the law of most states, civil asset forfeiture allows the police to keep what they seize and forfeit. Not only do they get to keep it, but for the most part, they don't have to account for it. And even if they account for it, generally no one looks into where they got it, or what they did with it.

And you know some psychiatic medicines are controlled subtances?
http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2001/501_drug.html

If a cop picks you up on the street and he finds you are carrying your mandated psych medicines, how is he going to know you are not an addict(or assume you are lying) and put you in jail and forced treatment for the"drug war"? What if they find adderall or some other psychiatrist prescribed drug in a piss test..? A mandatory 3 to 15 day psych eval, until the cops get around to getting your shrink on the phone can drive lower income families into bankruptcy..And let the property sell off begin.

Do you see where this is leading?

I hope these links work

4. Stress kills - how many killed by stress of bill collectors?
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 12:19 PM by oscar111
bill collectors sound to me llike high stress on the victim.

if the victim is also a sick person, surely thousands are killed by the stress of it.

Also consider those who pay the dr., and then have no rent money --- evicted. Stress there also kills, i am sure.

No real doctor would ever use a bill collector. Proof the field is now overrun by greedheads out for an easy way to make the family fortune.

5. Almost too depressed, surely very tired, to respond
I don't know what any of us are going to do about anything.

It's bad news every single freaking day. I'm on stress and fear and anger overload.

My sister is being treatened with a lien on her house over her deceased hubby's medical bills. She HAS to sell her home, which she's only occupied for three years. She is beside herself with fear and grief.

On our side of the family, she is the only one who ever "owned" property. It's beautiful but old on 1.25 acres. It's located out in the foothill countryside of the Sierra Neveda Mts. It's not worth as much as a home in a developement in the city but it does have value. NO ONE in that area can afford to buy the dang place.

When it does sell, she's worried she will have to pack up and leave the state...and me. We are close. I can't help as I'm struggling to keep the dump on section 8 that we're living in...there's no where else to go. Her health is in disrepair and she's, you guessed it, uninsured. Her teeth are falling out, her knees are blown out and her car doesn't work. NO income stream except for boarders she took on. If she didn't have to worry about her house being confiscated, she could settle down and find a little job to help keep the place going. In a remote area, there's little work with enough earning power to pay both the medical bills AND keep her property.

So where are we anyway? the Soviet Union??? People in these dire straights can't win for losing.

6. I am so sorry
I wish I could help.

I put this post here because Everyone else on DU is oblivious to the real drastic danger this proposes and it drops into obscurity. I would hope more out there would bother to check the links, and research I had done, and run with the info. I know I can't do much, except gather information or offer my thoughts. I just wish someone with more ability to help would help. That's why I say what I say,I am asking for people to LOOK and become alarmed and ACT if they do not want a future like this.

Denial in a situation like this, is very self destructive if you are a person involved in more hands on political action. This kind of selective obliviousness in America ,even on DU,it all scares the hell out of me and I shudder to think what people will do when they realize they were warned before, and instead of doing something when they could have, they blew it off for the unpleasantness factor or called it"conspiracy"just so they would not have to care, and being cowards went after the little fish and flash in the pan tactics.

7. Yep, I understand about the "interest factor" here and elsewhere.
You and I have seen interest peak on some subjects and fall like a rock on others...right here in these specialty forums.

In terms of "griping", I notice when I click into these forums that the thread counts in this one, health, and poverty have less than those in the enviro or other subjects. Human interest threads seem to be the last subject, of any importance, on most folks minds. :(

I realize that other subjects of political interest are important but when I see the basic human rights threads go virtually unnoticed, my heart freaks first, then falls into despair.

I wonder sometimes if this board is mostly attended by the middle class and their university offspring. Person's who are comfortable in their status, not suffering too much. Person's who are into high minded --esoteric ideals that "perhaps" we mere stuggling mortals can't possibly fathom. :eyes:

What can I do? I just keep coming in here to post my thoughts, read other's info, and act on issues that are presented to me...

For the record: I appreciate the work you've done. I look for your posts...
