Does your 4th Grader exhibit language-based learning difficulties?
I just received the following letter from Calvert School, which is our homeschool materials provider. It may prove of interest to you:

Dear Calvert Family,

By now, you should have received a letter about Calvert School’s new pilot program for Fourth Grade students with language-based learning differences. The program is designed for students with average to above average intelligence who experience difficulty reading, spelling, or writing, or have been diagnosed with dyslexia or other language-based learning difference. We are currently enrolling a maximum of sixty Fourth Grade students to participate in our pilot program and spaces are filling up quickly.

Though we realize that this program is not for every child, if you observe any of the following behaviors in your child, our pilot program may be appropriate for you.

· poor performance on tested material that was well known right after studying

· requests for clarification immediately after receiving instructions

· continued difficulty with spelling

· continued difficulty with reading

· inability to quickly identify the names of letters, numbers, shapes and colors when exposed to them in random sequences

Expert Curriculum

In order to best address the learning needs that correspond to these learning differences, we have partnered with the Jemicy School in Baltimore, Maryland, nationally recognized for educating children with dyslexia in Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade for over 30 years. Jemicy’s curriculum has been composed from the leading multi-sensory learning methodologies, including Orton-Gillingham and Wilson Learning, and refined in the classroom by their faculty of certified learning specialists. The Calvert and Jemicy faculties have designed the first comprehensive LLD curriculum program designed for use in a home schooling environment

It features the following.

complete parent orientation and support
step-by-step daily lesson plans
specialized curriculum that addresses the specific learning challenges of children with LLDs
special software to develop a child’s ability to read both fluently and out loud, compose original essays and creative writing projects, and master correct pronunciation and spelling
optional live instructional and observational sessions over the Internet with learning specialists assigned to your child
full Education Counselor support with optional Advisory Teaching Service (ATS) for test grading and certified transcripts

What makes this program effective is its attention to individual students. Participating students will benefit from a direct, sequential, multi-sensory approach to their reading instruction (decoding), comprehension, and written expression, contributing to greater academic success.

No-cost Commitment

If you feel that your Fourth Grader might benefit from this specialized curriculum and you are interested in considering participation in our pilot program this fall, please call a Client Services Representative at 1-888-487-4652 and request a free, no-obligation assessment test. Once your child has completed the test and returned it to Calvert, our assessment specialists will evaluate his or her performance and provide you with a confidential recommendation.

Sincerely,

Michelle Dunn
