Similar to the Photog group's contests? Record a one-off track and post them all in polls for voting? No danger of them being buried before votes are cast. B-)

Just curious...

Not even for a poll or anything but to share...

I think I would like that better.

3. I don't think competition is the answer as much as ...
an educated and sophisticated circle of friends who can suggest things, point out good things (no need to piss on any of our brothers and sisters IMO).

I just don't see music as competitive.

And yes, I too, would lose. :D

4. Well, I'm open to ideas
It doesn't have to be a competition, but I'd like to see a little more energy in the musician's forum. Providing more motivation to record and post stuff would be nice.

7. I would be interested
I'm wondering what we would record. Are you talking completed songs (drums, bass, guitars, vocals ect..) or do you mean as in more of a written song demo type thing?

8. I would think it could be anything you're comfortable sharing
I think this is a good idea too, be it a contest or simply a "gallery."
Seems like the biggest wrinkle is where to host the files.

10. I think it should be pretty inclusive--as completed or sketchy as you like
I hadn't thought of how fleshed out these tracks should be in terms of production, but to make the playing field more level in the case of a competition, I suppose a very loose subject or theme might be suggested so each contribution is composed and produced in a similar amount of time. If it's just going to be a toss-off extemporaneous sort of thing rather than a 'best of your archives', I don't think elaborate production would be very common.

As to the mechanics of it, maybe the subject or theme could be suggested the first of each month. Then the tracks, probably in various stages of completion, would be gathered into a thread at the end of the month for people to listen to. Since I am notoriously bad with deadlines myself, I'm not sure how well imposing one would work, or what amount of time would be reasonable. But at any rate, that's one idea on how it would work--also we could likely scare up some communal hosting space for everyone at one of the music hosting sites out there for no cost.

11. Hi folks,
I've been meaning to drop in here to say hello. So Hello. I like the idea of listening to other DU'ers music. There is a web site that is free to join called Artist Launch and you can upload MP3's for people to listen to. My buds and I have a couple of songs on there now (we're called "Reloaded"). I play the bass in the band and I'm learning how to play Alto Sax just for the fun of it. I'll check back later. Nice to meet y'all.

12. It would be fun. The "goal" should be narrow at first, maybe.
For example a cover tune contest (i know, i know) is a good way to get a lot of people involved, song-writer or not. Of course a stipulation could be producing the most creative interpretation of the original song .

Or, the contest could be something like using only a fixed set of chords or key, it could be a hardware vs software battle ... lots of possibilities.

fwiw, in addition to one's own ISP and a few decent free hosts, audioshots.com offers 150mb a year for 19 bucks. It looks like a good alternative to getting a domain name plus hosting.(which can run as low as 50 dollars a year)
