Guitar Trainer/Recorders?

I am looking for a decent sounding guitar trainer/recorder.

I am looking at these so far:
Boss EBand JS-8
Tascam GT-R1

Then I saw this:
Zoom R8 Multitrack SD Recorder
http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/r8

The Zoom has much more actual recording capabilities but I like being able to jam along with prerecorded songs.

Anyone been down this path?
Suggestions?
Any other brands and models I should check out?

thanks

1. It's been awhile, but what I did -- using say an 8 track . . . . . .

I recorded the prerecorded song on two tracks, then would overdub my guitar, bass, mandolin or whatever on one or two other tracks. I've read pretty good things about the Zoom R8 for the type use you are thinking about. If that unit can record 4 sources at once, you can record your instrument at the same time you record the prerecorded song. Then, you can adjust the relative levels later.

Another choice is the smaller Zoom H4N. It's a bit smaller than the R8.

I really enjoyed playing along with live recordings of my favorite bands. Need to do it again, come to think of it.

You can also get a small mixer where you input say a CD player and your instruments and then take the output into any little digital recorder -- even an Iphone I think. The only problem with that is you can't come back and adjust the level of your instrument relative to the prerecorded song. But it works.

If you have never done any of this before, the R8 gives you some growing room at a relatively affordable price. Pick up a used one on ebay and you could always sell it for about the same you paid if it isn't exactly what you like.

If you are willing to pull some hair and curse while you learn, you can buy an interface for $100 or so and get Reaper -- a pretty decent recording software for about $60. Then, you can do a lot of things.

Hope that helps some. And good luck, it's a lot of fun.
