Former Sen. John Edwards on Thursday formally launched his second bid to be president. Here's a glance at what he has been doing since his last run, how the political landscape looks at the moment, and some of the challenges ahead:

STAYING VISIBLE

One of the questions facing Edwards was whether he could remain visible after he left the Senate in 2005. Here's how he has done it:

POVERTY. Edwards created the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. The center held forums and is expected to produce a book on the subject in April. Edwards traveled the country talking about poverty.

SELLING BOOKS. Edwards made appearances around the country on behalf of his book, "Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives." Elizabeth Edwards made several appearances for her memoir, "Saving Graces."

MINIMUM WAGE. Edwards campaigned in Missouri, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, Ohio and Nevada for higher state minimum wage laws. He appeared in Washington with U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy to lobby for raising the federal minimum wage.
