Posted Jan. 17, 2006 -- The Congress of Racial Equality – known for leading Freedom Riders into Mississippi during the height of the Civil Rights Movement – named two controversial figures to receive Martin Luther King Day honors Monday.
CORE named Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour – who voted four years ago to keep the Confederate symbol on his state’s flag – as a co-honoree at this year’s Awards Dinner in New York City. In 2003, Barbour also spoke before the Council of Concerned Citizens, an off-shoot of the pro-segregationist White Citizens Council of the 1950s.
The other honored guest was U.S. Ambassador John Bolton who was lambasted by members of the Congressional Black Caucus during his 2005 confirmation hearing for allowing illegal arms shipments to Haiti while he was under-secretary for arms control at the State Department ...
Last year, CORE chose top White House adviser Karl Rove as the recipient of the Martin Luther King Day Award ...
