CORE Names Barbour and Bolton to Get MLK Award

By Ed Wiley III with News & Wire Reports

Posted Jan. 17, 2006 -- The Congress of Racial Equality – known for leading Freedom Riders into Mississippi during the height of the Civil Rights Movement – named two controversial figures to receive Martin Luther King Day honors Monday.

CORE named Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour – who voted four years ago to keep the Confederate symbol on his state’s flag – as a co-honoree at this year’s Awards Dinner in New York City. In 2003, Barbour also spoke before the Council of Concerned Citizens, an off-shoot of the pro-segregationist White Citizens Council of the 1950s.

The other honored guest was U.S. Ambassador John Bolton who was lambasted by members of the Congressional Black Caucus during his 2005 confirmation hearing for allowing illegal arms shipments to Haiti while he was under-secretary for arms control at the State Department ...

Last year, CORE chose top White House adviser Karl Rove as the recipient of the Martin Luther King Day Award ...

1. How 'bout this for an understatement?
But in more recent years, CORE has taken a more conservative turn...

core has become a right-wing, very conservative, republican supported organization and boasts of its more white than black membership. core is not the organization of the sixties.

3. Yeah, I saw that
and some defenders of the choice. I was surprised there wasn't a stronger response.

... through the cries for "Self-Determination" in the 70's and "Equal Opportunity" in the 80's to the struggle for community development in the 90's, CORE has championed true equality for all people. As the "shock troops" and pioneers of the civil rights movement, CORE has paved the way for the nation to follow. As we approach the end of the 20th century, CORE has turned its focus to preparing minorities for the technical and skills demands of the new millennium.

Under the banner of "TRUTH! LOGIC! & COURAGE!", CORE will continue to promote harmony and healing in all aspects of society; calling the shots straight--even when it hurts--and combating the haters, race baiters and racial racketeers bent on keeping us apart.

Their actions indicate they've taken the partisan route to achieve these worthy goals, as if the other side has no 'racial racketeers'. Partisanhip is ALL about keeping people apart!

4. Isn't that a conservative group headed by Niger Innis?
So that doesn't surprise me.

5. Roy Innis is the organization's CEO
which isn't much better.
