1. Karenina, I have to say that I really don't see what all of the fuss is about
I find her unpretentiousness refreshing and I think that she's got a very nice voice, but other than that I don't get why there are 743 threads about her on GD.

Having said all that though, this song is NICE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8r9lRJ6yHY

3. I've been a musician all my life
but stopped playing last year. This bit of media hype is pounding on so many very old buttons in addition to exposing wounds that have obviously not healed. I've been crying for days. I'm feeling a bit better now. It's been cathartic.

4. I don't get it either.
I first saw the clip on The View early last week. Whoopie introduced it as a video that showed things are not always what they seem. The/her implication was that people do not think "unattractive" people can sing...Huh?

My exposure to DU has been limited recently so I am unaware of all the threads about the story. The media, though, has gone way overboard IMO.

6. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me either
But I think it shows how shallow our society has become that we have completely devalued "unattractive" people, especially women to the point that we are flabbergasted when they are able to do something well.

My exposure to DU has been limited recently

I'm sure your that life has been much calmer lately. :)

10. exactly

Like Karenina, I was into independent music back when I lived in LA (from 1991-2004) and yes, Goldberg is right on the mark. Her implication IS that unless you look a certain way, are under a certain age, it is damb near impossible to have a career in the music industry. They are not interested in taking a chance on anyone starting out who is over the age of 23, over size 0 and produced into oblivion. You may be able to sing your butt off, but if you can't give the guy greenlighting your demo a woody, then you ain't getting any consideration.
That is how it works.

11. Don't forget waist length hair

Every R&B "princess" for the last 15 years has fit all of your descriptions with the addition of having long, flowing waist length hair. I call it the Aaliyah syndrome (though I actually adored Aaliyah).

That's why Rihanna's ever so "dramatic" makeover was so huge. Instead of paying somebody to teach her how to sing, she just took out her weave and suddenly she became this STAR. Who knew that you can be a singer AND have short hair?! :eyes:

8. Susan's "event" has allowed me the space to feel better
about some issues I've felt quite bad about for a very long time. I got my daily dose here:

9. I just loved how she put everyone in that studio in their place
they had their claws out and their fangs sharpened for this woman who dared leave her house looking as she did. While I wish she would not sing Disney tunes and she she would sink her teeth into meatier vocal numbers, having been through 3 years of voice lessons, I can appreciate her raw talent and execution. I hope she does very well.

14. When all this started, I think it was her Priest who said that she had
some mental issues and he was worried about how this would affect her. As my late Grandmother would say....Lord Today.

I'm SO NOT into organized religion but immediately felt what that might mean to HER. You know, that horrible EMPATHY thang...

Boyfriend sums it up again.

16. Charlie died this morning.
We hadn't spoken in more than a year after I rescued his wife "by remote" who was suffering a mental breakdown. (Would that we'd had TWITTER!) As I approached the Hauptbahnhof parking lot, quick stepping to catch the :10, a woman frantically signaled me and got out of her car.

SABINE!! I've not seen her in at least 2 years, she'd viewed Charlie's body this morning and was there to pick up her niece. She said she'd thought of me as someone who should be immediately informed, knowing the surrounding insanity and whizzing about in her brain about how to contact me. And there I was walking toward her. :wow: Her G_d did it for her, my connectivity did it for me and Charlie's
still-hovering-about-LOVES-US spirit did it for us BOTH.

This is Sabine:
