PHILADELPHIA, MS(WLBT) - And voters in Philadelphia, Mississippi may have made history last night. We say "may" because the election has not been officially certified yet.
As it stands now, James Young holds a 41 vote edge over three term incumbent Rayburn Waddell with 44 affidavit ballots yet to be counted.
Young would be the first African American mayor elected in Philadelphia.
In a city most known across the state and the country for the murders of three civil rights workers, change has been slow. But it was change that has brought mayoral candidate James Young to the threshold of history.
"This is a testament of change of mind sets of communities. I needed every vote I got to be in the position I'm in now," said Young.
Young leads incumbent Rayburn Waddell after Tuesday night's election with only 44 uncounted affidavit ballots standing in his way. Many including Young believe those votes will only change his final margin of victory. Young is already focusing on the future.
"I use the term, gotta think outside the box. My election is outside the box. it sends a message throughout Mississippi and through the nation Philadelphia's evolving," said Young.
