http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=326137&mesg_id=326137I notice that my title is a bit off. Sorry guys...but I was just so surprised to note that he found it appalling. He's spent most of his time on CNN defending racism. This is the first time I've seen him take some offense by the picture and of course the comments about Michelle Obama.
And let me tell you the racists are out in full force. This brings back a comment my sister made in regards to Blacks keeping it real versus some Whites keepin' it real-- (this was after watching The Chappelle Show)*.
She was like, and she blatantly said this plays into stereotypes. When Blacks "keep it real" it always seems to basically resemble them breaking out of the "status of conformity." As my race and ethnics professor would say...the status of conformity is what is deemed to be "normal" which falls into this sort of 'general idea of what is "whiteness"' (I so wish I could break down that class for you, but you can get his book.)** While when
some Whites 'keep it real', it seems to be borderline or just straight racism.
Take for instance this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Juw7cha48EOr you even see it in the skit below of David Chappelle keepin' it real when the White guy was trying to be "down" I guess.
You even see the weird standard during the primaries. Some commentators even stated that Obama had to hold himself back or he'd look like the angry Black man who's beating up on an old White man...what?! And this refrain was continuous.
Now this has been going on for a while but I think with the rise of a Black man President we have this new spectrum of issues and more blatant racism than ever before. If it was hidden or de facto, that is proving to be false.
But to go back to Christie---he really surprised. Normally he's the first one to defend these fools. My professor, Professor Spears, the one I mentioned about the race and ethnicity course he knows some of these commentators (apparently he said he worked with a few). And he stated they get paid a lot to "diss on Black people" his words. He was like, most of them don't believe what they're saying but because of the pay they'll do it. I was shocked to say the least.
In any event something interesting to watch. As for the idiot in the video who said Michelle Obama was descended from gorillas and we know that was racist. I had a similar incident happen to me. I remember this White guy was chatting me up when I lived in London and I had asked him if he normally dates Black women. He stated no, he dated brown women. Brown women in England it seems is equivalent to Indian women. I said why not and his response was and I quote, "Black women look like gorrillas." You'd think he'd stop there right...nope, he kept it going. "But you don't look like that because of..." When he saw how disgusted I was, then he said, "At least now you know." As though I'm supposed to be fuckin' grateful for his candidness. Ugh...the memories.
