Monica Conyers
**I knew she was going to be a disaster when she was fighting in a Detroit bar soon after she was elected. Damn Shame. Detroit has had enough mess for a lifetime. I hope people show up and vote in some decent council members next election.

Conyers pleads guilty to conspiracy
She faces up to 5 years in prison

Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery and is free on personal bond.
U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn said, "The defendant now stands convicted."

The one count of conspiring to commit bribery is punishable by up to five years in prison.

No sentencing date has been set.

In court, Conyers’ combative demeanor was gone, replaced by soft-spoken resignation as the judge and his staff several times asked her to speak up.

Conyers, the wife of powerful Democratic congressman U.S. Rep. John Conyers, appeared before Cohn to answer charges in connection with the wide-ranging probe of wrongdoing at Detroit city hall.

1. Oh no...
...I hadn't heard of this. Conspiring to commit bribery? :wow:
What's going on w/Mrs. Conyers, that compels her to do such a thing?

2. She has been an embarrassment for quite sometime.
Here she is at a City Council meeting calling the Council President "shrek". This was all over the news for weeks. :eyes:

There was always some mess going on with her and the media had no problems covering it 24/7.

8. (sigh)
Sadly, if a woman w/a respected spouse is deemed "inappropriate"--the media would have no trouble at all, finding the time to cover her every move. It feeds into their agenda of selling papers, magazines, etc. by trashing or exploiting women.

Whitney Houston having a baby? Oh, that's nice...give it a paragraph on the "celebrity celebrations and announcements" page.
Whitney Houston addicted to cocaine and kicking Bobby Brown's ass every chance she gets? Give her the cover and a ten page spread. :eyes:

10. This is why so many Detroiters could never figure out why
John married her!! They just don't match and this goes beyond age difference. There is only one theory that makes any sense and if you know anything about JC, you can guess what that is. If not, PM me.

3. Here's an overview...
December 2005: Conyers gets into a fight with another woman -- Rebecca Mews, 34, of Walled Lake -- at the Crossroads Lounge in Detroit. They were there to celebrate the birthday of Mews' date, a lawyer. Both women accuse each other of starting the altercation, but a Wayne County Prosecutor's Office investigation clears Conyers and finds the other woman started the fight. The lawyer agreed.

November 2007: Conyers admonishes council members not to argue. After longtime foe Sheila Cockrel muttered, "Well, at least it's not in the bar," Conyers called Cockrel a "drunk" and said, "Did you say something about a bar? Because you drink a lot at the bar when I see you."

April 2008: In early hearings in the text-message scandal, Conyers erupts after Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. objects to her interrupting. She calls him "Shrek" twice. "You're not my daddy," she yells. "You do that at home, not here. Give me some respect cause I'm tired of that. Be respectful!" The incident gets national attention and has been viewed on YouTube more than 100,000 times.

February 2008: Conyers, a then-member of a city pension board, is accused of threatening another trustee, DeDan Milton, with a gun after a dispute erupts. Her then-aide Sam Riddle insists Conyers was referring to her husband as a "political" gun. Trustee Sheila Kneeshaw describes Conyers as "ranting and raving." No charges are filed.

August 2008: Denver police are called to the hotel room where Conyers is staying for the Democratic National Convention after the Magnolia Hotel placed Conyers, her husband and two sons in a room with two queen-size beds instead of a suite. Conyers said she called police when the hotel threatened to have her things removed from her room. Hotel officials said a Denver police officer working security called for backup when Conyers created a commotion.

February 2009: Conyers earns widespread condemnation for an incident with Councilman Kwame Kenyatta in which she made fun of his hearing aid, ridiculed him for rumors he had cancer and mocked his lack of a college degree. Conyers had to be restrained during the argument.

April 2009: Conyers tells Sheila Cockrel to "shut the f--- up" in a dispute before council meeting begins. She then urges Cockrel, a widow, to "get a man."

4. I wonder if she is bipolar and not under treatment...
I'm not a doctor but I think there are variations of the disorder where people are either relatively normal or out of control. (As opposed to being depressed then moving onto to manic.)

6. Yup....
When she was running for city council, my husband and I would laugh at her commercials. She stated she "earned" the Conyers name for .......

We thought, wow, she wants to make sure people get the connection! She's always been a mess. A friend of mine calls her ghetto conyers. Monica and the previous Mayor (Kwame Kilpatrick) really blew opportunities to do something positive for Detroit. Ridiculous.

9. My husband has always said that the downfall of Detroit was the result of
Coleman Young calling reagan "old prune face." Most everyone applauded Young at the time - you go, boy - but reagan was quick to cut off all federal monies to the city. From what I have heard, Detroit has never been quite the same.

11. Calling reagan prune face had absolutely nothing to do with it.
As a matter of fact, most Detroiters don't even know that happened and Detroit's problems started and REMAINS on the STATE/REGIONAL levels. You would have to have been in Detroit since the sixties to know the history of Detroit's problems.

13. Looks like John Conyers is being scrutinized as well. I haven't
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 08:28 PM by firedupdem
read the articles yet, but something is going on with a letter he wrote.

What did John Conyers know?

But when an elected official pulls the switcheroo on a controversial project after his crooked wife gets $10,000 from a beneficiary of that project, the issue goes beyond flip-flopping. Now, it’s about potential misconduct and payoffs. And now, the situation ought to pique the interest of the local prosecutor’s office.

So U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) needs to join the long line of Detroit pols who’ve apparently sat down recently with the U.S. Attorney in Detroit. He needs to explain, under oath, the circumstances that led to his change of heart about a hazardous waste injection well in Romulus.

And if Conyers hesitates to do so voluntarily, Detroit’s federal prosecutor should subpoena him.

What did he know about the money his wife, now-convicted Detroit City councilwoman Monica Conyers, reportedly got from Jim Papas, whose company was planning to operate the well and needed approval from the Environmental Protection Agency? And why did John Conyers write a letter to the EPA in 2007 in support of Papas’ efforts, after opposing it at public hearings in 2003 and 2004?
