I have suspected that a lot of the "disappointment" in Obama
by some on DU has more to do with the color of his skin than single-payer, Iraq/Afghanistan, DADT/DOMA, etc., and seeing some of the responses to this made-up controversy about the answer President Obama gave to the Gates question unfortunately confirms my suspicions. That's not to say it's all about his race but I suspect that if Obama were a white man (or white woman) and everything else stayed the same the "outrage" we see everyday by some people would not be so intense.

I hope I am wrong but right now I'm not sure what to think.

1. PT, please don't tell me you're just realizing this.
:)

There is a member of DU who made comments during the primaries like: "As a white person, I would like a candidate whose "spiritual guide" doesn't embrace a God who wants to kill white people in favor of blacks."

This person is STILL a member of DU. And just posting away.

I've made the comment a few times that many of the white "feminists" on this board who have such a problem with him and his wife bend over backwards and contort themselves defending Sarah Palin, Geraldine Ferraro etc. If FEMINISM is the issue, how the hell can anyone defend Sarah Palin, an avowed and PROUD anti-feminist?? And these same women never have a word to say when Michelle Obama is attacked as she is often and nastily.

And we know how other groups of white people have attacked the president mercilessly over issues. It's hard to not take it as another game of Beat up the Black Guy.

24. I was more of a casual lurker here during the primaries
but I posted on another board that was open to both liberals and conservatives and I was shocked at how some people I previously thought of as good liberals became raging racists during the primaries! Some of these people I had know for years but as soon as Obama became the front runner they suddenly starting posting some of the most vile, racist crap I had ever seen, stuff that would even embarrass right wingers!

A lot of them were also self proclaimed liberal feminists who also attacked Michele Obama with a vengeance. To my shock, it was they, not the right wingers, who spread the Michele "whitey" tape BS!

Although I think hopefully most Democrats are not racist and have open minds, seems we still have a few Dixiecrats left in the party!

2. Your suspicions are on point.
I've only checked in a few times the past few days and the comments here are sickening.
Last night, a poster was pushing his own personal "fact", that black men commit more crimes than whites so that is why Gates was treated the way he was. Some of these people are willfully ignorant and they also consider themselves superior in every way shape and form. I'll post here, but I think I'm reducing my activity to lurker as much as possible in the other forums. I'm not going to engage with bigots much longer. It's making me really bitter and I don't want to feel that way.

and that just because an opinion is posted on DU doesn't mean it's typical of DU-ers. (That's not to say that there aren't quite a few "liberals" with blinders also, but they're in a small minority). Try not to let this make you bitter. Two steps forward, one step back.

5. Oh girl, I saw that. And this is the same poster who posted the comment I referenced in post #1
This person's ignorance and obvious dislike and mistrust of black people is as blatant as can be. And whether the mods and admins wish to acknowledge it or not, the fact that he is still here and a member of this board speaks volumes.

Forkboy posted a Greatest Hits by this poster. Sickening does not even begin to describe it. And what's funny is that Forkboy's post was deleted, but the poster is still on this board.

11. at one point,...
...i only visited (and posted in) two or three "groups" of interest to me. i wouldn't enter gd or gd-p, at all.

not sure why i've been more active the last couple of months. entering the forum to read or post in a group, still meant "seeing" much of the garbage as it was posted to the main boards.

i guess i just couldn't take it anymore. i sincerely felt the need to get the negative feelings (and energy) "out" of me, and to those that 'so graciously share their wisdom, on du.' :eyes:

But I guess the bright side to that is that a lot of people did come forward and put that jackass in his place.

3. unfortunately you are right
between Prop 8 hate, the chimp stimulus cartoon, Michael Jackson, the Gates incident and the reaction to Obamas extremely moderate remarks on the Gates incident, its clear that there is some racism that acceptable here. Its disgusting.

12. after a board "incident"...
...where a specific group of members were angry about how their issues were treated in the main forums, skinner commented on what's allowable.

he shared that he doesn't ban every single insenstive, intolerant comment, so that people are given an opportunity to "learn" (memebers of specific groups can tell people exactly why it's "inappropriate.") in other words, we get to wear ourselves out w/attempts to "enlighten" the ingnorant masses. :eyes:

on one level, i can understand and appreciate aspects of this stance. because some people ARE open to correction (not many around here, but i digress). the problem i have with this is where is the line? and when does it cross over from allowing people to "discuss and learn", to enabling bigotry?

6. The very word "disappointment" is
incredibly condescending to me and speaks volumes, though I can't articulate it. It's almost like, we've given you a chance, you credit to your race, and now see what you've done, you're not who I think you are. To some, Blacks and Whites, he must never speak of anything racially related unless it's of Kumbaya. He can't point out obvious stupidity if Blacks and Whites are involved.

That is what "dissappointed" sounds like. He is a politician, he never promised to perform magic, and he sure as hell is governing as he said he would. So why are they so "dissappointed".

...when some couldn't STOP pointing out how fantastic they felt about their decision to vote for the "black dude." :eyes: It just made them feel soooo special.

I think about it everytime there's a comment like,".....b-b-but *i* gave him the presidency, he owes me___(fill in the blank)___". I always want to ask if they're pissed because the vote didn't come with a shoe shine, some pancakes and an official obama lawn jockey.

26. Kind of like when bigots say 'we freed the slaves'
as if they deserve an award or something! I mean, you don't get extra credit for doing what should have been done in the first place, for doing the right thing. It's like a man saying to his wife 'you owe me because I don't beat the shit out of you every night!' Please! People are supposed to do the right thing in the first place!

19. This thread speaks for me....
But then, I am called so many names on DU till it ain't even funny.

I mean, names like Black Racist, Homophobe and other duzzies (called these once again,
just the other day in a thread...where poster was obvious sock puppet)
I have had PUMAs use my posting name on other forums and used to denounce Barack Obama,
my posting name added to the Urban Dictionary as meaning a Black racist
(which I had to ask to be removed), and even given the credit of the word Pastorbating
in same in this way......

Pastorbating 52 up, 48 down
Accusing the media of unfairly and self indulgently going after Obama for his ties to racist, homophoe and afro-centrist hatemonger Jeremiah Wright.
Commonly used in the nutroots such as Democratic Underground,
usually by the far left black nationalists such as Frenchiecat and her alter ego Catherina.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Frenchiecat

I don't even know who Catherina is.

I'm still trying to figure out what I did other than agressively
fight racism on these boards during the primaries,
and made the mistake of not rejecting Barack Obama as a candidate altogether
due to his tenious link to that McClurkin guy.

even the latest in the Gates case. At least Gates is someone Obama ACTUALLY knows. Bush* commented on the Terri Schiavo case, but there weren't the loud and constant howls of protest of him weighing on an issue that shouldn't have even come to his attention.

It's like a black man isn't allowed to have an opinion, unless it makes white people comfortable. :eyes:
