Pacific edition, Saturday, January 19, 2008

U.S. airmen and Marines from across the Pacific are heading to Thailand this month for the field training exercise Cope Tiger, the Air Force said Thursday.

The annual exercise runs for 11 days beginning Jan. 26 and is the only multinational field training held in Thailand.

About 700 U.S. servicemembers from bases in Japan, South Korea, Okinawa, Hawaii and Alaska will participate, according to information released by the 13th Air Force. Thailand and Singapore will send about 700 servicemembers from the Royal Thai Air Force and Army, and the Royal Singapore Air Force, the service said.

Cope Tiger is sponsored by the Thai and U.S. governments and combines military field training and humanitarian assistance.

U.S. Air Force units include the 51st Fighter Wing’s 25th Fighter Squadron, Osan Air Base, South Korea; the 18th Wing’s 909th Air Refueling Squadron, 961st Airborne Air Control Squadron, and 18th Communications Squadron from Kadena Air Base, Okinawa; and the 374th Airlift Wing’s 36th Airlift Squadron, Yokota Air Base, Japan.
