Cadets can do a lot of amazing things at the Air Force Academy. But they’re not allowed to fly airplanes.
Until now.
The academy is experimenting with a flight training program that puts cadets back in the cockpit. The cadets won’t be flying jets. They’ll be restricted to small civilian planes like the Cessna T-41 Mescalero.
Called "Jump Start," the program marks the beginning of a program that officials say is meant to enhance the academy's focus on airmanship.
There had traditionally been three parts to the airmanship instruction: soaring, parachuting and powered flight — elective courses meant whether the airmen were destined to be pilots or not. They are intended to round out cadets' knowledge and familiarity with airmanship principles.
