Initial Flight Screening course harder to pass

It is tougher to become a pilot, according to Gen. William Looney, who oversees aviator training as head of the Air Education and Training Command.

Until last year, about 99 percent of the prospective pilots going through the Initial Flight Screening course earned passing grades and were eligible to move unto the next phase of flight training, Looney told the audience at the Air Force Association’s winter conference in Orlando, Fla.

The courses were taught at civilian flight schools around the country with little military supervision.

In October 2007, IFS was centralized at Pueblo, Colo. While most of the course is taught by civilian instructors from Doss Aviation in private aircraft, Air Force officers are on hand to monitor the instruction and oversee the students.

Now the passing rate has fallen to about 90 percent, Looney said.
