FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Lockheed Martin has unveiled its second Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) prototype, a 15,000-pound utility vehicle loaded with state-of-the-art technology.

The new variant is outfitted with a remote-controlled, lightweight, .30-caliber gun on the roof, a large cabin behind the driver’s cab and a trailer attached to meet ambitious JLTV payload requirements. The new prototype will be put through additional rigorous testing, Lockheed officials said at the Association of the U.S. Army’s (AUSA’s) winter symposium here. JLTV contracts are expected to be awarded this summer.

In terms of blast protection, Lockheed calls its vehicle design an improved V-shaped hull.

“We’ve blown up 13 different hull configurations before we optimized our hull design. We’re approaching MRAP levels of protections,” Louis De Santis, Lockheed vice president of ground vehicles, said Feb. 27.

Lockheed also has added lightweight armor composites to the vehicle, which is built to accept additional add-on armor.
