Senator says Cyber Command belongs in Colorado

Colorado Springs, Colo. — A Colorado senator says his state has a good shot at becoming the home for the Air Force’s new Cyber Command, provided politics stays out of the equation.

Colorado Springs — already home to several Air Force installations and the service academy — has the technological base, educational support, labor force and complimentary industrial base to support the new command, said Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., after a speech at the opening of the National Space Symposium on Tuesday.

“We have a good chance, if politics doesn’t get involved,” said Allard, who will retire at the end of this year after 17 years in the U.S. Senate. “But if this becomes a political issue, I don’t think we’ll fare so well.”

Delegations from 18 states are vying to host Cyber Command., which stood up a provisional command in November 2006 at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana under the direction of Maj. Gen. William Lord.
