Minot airman gets year in jail for fatal wreck

MINOT, N.D. — A Minot Air Force Base man has been sentenced to a year in jail on a negligent homicide charge stemming from a fiery crash that killed another airman.

Authorities say Airman 1st Class Stephen Garrett, 20, was speeding and lost control of a car he was driving on the outskirts of Minot last July. The car hit two trees and caught fire. Garrett’s passenger, 21-year-old Adam Barrs, was killed.

Garrett pleaded guilty in March to negligent homicide.

Judge Douglas Mattson sentenced Garrett to jail, allowing work release. He is to pay 10 percent of his earnings as restitution, and $75 per month after his release from jail.
