CLEVELAND— A 21-year-old Marine shot at a bus stop Jan. 5 while home from Iraq on holiday leave has died, and the two suspects in the killing could face upgraded charges, police and prosecutors said Monday.
An autopsy was ordered on the body of Lance Cpl. Robert Crutchfield, who died Sunday night at MetroHealth Medical Center.
He was recovering from a neck wound but recently developed an infection that spread, according to his aunt, Alberta Holt.
Crutchfield served in Iraq for more than one year, supervising supply shipments to troops, and had orders to return. He didn’t tell relatives of his orders to return to Iraq until he was weeks into his 30-day leave, Holt said.
Two men charged with attempted murder and aggravated robbery in the attack — Ean Farrow, 19, and Thomas Ray III, 20, both of Cleveland — have pretrial hearings May 29. They could face murder charges, police Lt. Thomas Stacho said.
Their attorneys could not be reached for comment Monday. A message seeking comment was left for Farrow’s attorney, and repeated calls to the law office listed in court records for Ray went unanswered.
