Newburyport's soldiers to return home from Iraq this weekend
NEWBURYPORT — More than 100 soldiers in the Newburyport-based 182nd Engineers Sapper Company deployed to Iraq last summer will return home this weekend — exactly one year to the date they left.
"This is the first time in a year I feel like I can breathe," said Kathy Klufts, the mother of Pvt. Anthony Klufts and the coordinator of the local family readiness support group for the Sapper Company, part of the National Guard unit.
Though the exact time of their arrival in Newburyport is privileged information for security reasons, according to the Office of Public Affairs for the National Guard, it is likely they will return sometime on Saturday. snip
The unit will land at an undisclosed nearby airport and will be escorted to Newburyport by the Massachusetts State Police. (Hanscom, DUH!)
The Newburyport police will meet the convoy at the Newburyport exit off Interstate 95 and escort the soldiers into the city and to the National Guard armory on Low Street.
