OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A pair of suspected trespassers caught the attention of a unit training early Tuesday at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

A military police reaction team responded to the site, in the Acorn training area in the western side of the 932-square-mile base, and found a male civilian bleeding and wounded, said Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Cox, a combat center spokesman. The man was taken by Mercy Air helicopter to Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs and was being treated for wounds caused by metal and glass, Cox said.

Initially, the man’s injuries were believed to have been caused by a gunshot wound, but Cox said that investigators later determined the man had not been shot.

A second civilian also suspected of trespassing fled in a vehicle, and several law enforcement agencies were looking for that person, Cox said.

The incident remained under investigation. No other details were available.
