TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. — A Marine spokesman says a suspected scrap metal thief at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center was injured after a Marine opened fire on the vehicle he was riding in as it fled the base.

Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Cox said Thursday the Marine appears to have attempted to disable the vehicle by shooting at it. Cox says the vehicle passenger was injured Tuesday by flying shrapnel.

The news comes a day after the Marine Corps reported the man was found injured on the base after apparently falling out of a fleeing vehicle.

Cox says two Marines, including the one who fired the shots, have been relieved of duty pending an investigation into the shooting.
