Plan for combat training consolidation scrapped

The plan to centralize ground combat training for airmen is the latest project scrapped by the Air Force’s new leadership.

The “Common Battlefield Airmen Training” school was envisioned as opening in 2010 and training upwards of 14,000 airmen annually.

Instead of standing up the new school, the Air Force will continue to train airmen at several locations, depending on their deployed assignment and career field, Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and acting Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley decided. The judgment came after an Aug. 27 meeting with the service’s major command leaders.

“Since the CBAT concept began in 2001, the Air Force has enhanced existing training sites and vastly improved the quality and quantity of training based on real-time lessons learned from today’s fight,” an Air Force spokesman said.

The service was considering three homes for the school: Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn.; Barksdale Air Force Base, La.; and Moody Air Force Base, Ga.
