SAT scores of students in Defense Department schools in the past school year drooped by 3 points in critical reading and in writing and 2 points in math compared to the previous year, leading school officials to review some near-term and long-term initiatives and support programs.

“We study all assessment results closely and are concerned about this year’s scores, particularly in math,” said Shirley Miles, director of the Department of Defense Education Activity, in announcing the scores. “We will be analyzing the data to better inform and enable us to implement the right programs to improve our students’ performance.”

In math, DoDEA students’ scores dropped from 501 to 499, now 16 points below the national average SAT score of 515, which did not change from 2007.

Writing scores dropped from 495 to 492 for DoDEA students, who are now two points below the national SAT average of 494, which also did not change from 2007.

Scores dropped from 512 to 509 in the area of critical reading for DoDEA students, while the national average SAT score remained the same at 502.
