Extradition OK’d in lance cpl. slaying

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — North Carolina officials say a Mexican court has approved returning a Marine accused of killing a pregnant colleague to the U.S.

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Thursday he expects to have 21-year-old Cpl. Cesar Laurean in custody in about a week. But both the prosecutor and Laurean’s attorney say it may be several weeks before he returns.

Laurean is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach. The 20-year-old from Vandalia, Ohio, was eight months pregnant when she was killed late last year.

Her remains were found in Laurean’s back yard near North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune, where both Marines served as clerks.

Laurean was arrested in Mexico in April.
