CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — About 1,000 North Carolina-based Marines are deploying to Iraq’s Anbar province to help Iraqi forces as they take responsibility for the region’s security.

Marine officials said the troops from 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines were set to begin leaving Tuesday from Camp Lejeune.

In addition, a battalion from Camp Lejeune is scheduled to deploy in November for Afghanistan as part of a task force of 2,000 troops that will replace two departing Marine units. The 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment had been scheduled to go to Iraq.
