HONOLULU — A soldier who died in Texas while training with the Hawaii Army National Guard has been identified by the military as Sgt. Julian Manglona.

The 39-year-old Manglona was an Army Reserve soldier from the 100th Battalion, assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. In civilian life, he was a police officer on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands.

The military says Manglona collapsed Thursday after a six-mile run in the North Fort Hood training area. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in Gatesville, Texas.

About 1,200 soldiers with the brigade and about 500 soldiers from the battalion are scheduled to depart for the Middle East later this month. It would have been Manglona’s second deployment to Iraq and Kuwait.
