European briefs: Army NCO found guilty of larceny, loses rank

European edition, Sunday, October 19, 2008

VICENZA, Italy — An Army staff sergeant stationed with the U.S. contingent of NATO’s AFSOUTH command in Naples was found guilty of larceny in a general court-martial that ended Thursday.

John A. Dukes, assigned to Company A, was sentenced to a reduction of two ranks, forfeiture of $500 in pay for three months and 90 days of various restrictions, according to a news release issued by the Southern European Task Force public affairs office.

He was tried in Vicenza because SETAF has jurisdiction over all Army forces stationed in Italy.

A military jury found Dukes, who had entered a not-guilty plea, guilty of misappropriating about $23,600 in housing allowances and making a false official statement.
