Vets Groups Divided on McCainOctober 21, 2008
The Dispatch
Republican nominee John McCain has taken the blame for his 1980 divorce from Carol McCain, calling the ending of his first marriage "my greatest moral failure."
But the former Navy pilot and Vietnam prisoner of war, whose marriage fell apart in the years following his return home after more than five years in brutal captivity, said he is proud of his proposals to help fellow veterans.
"America has a moral obligation to care for those who have served our nation with honor," McCain said in response to questions to the presidential candidates from the group Disabled American Veterans.
But McCain told the group that, after "dramatic increases" over the past eight years in veterans health-care funding, money isn't always the answer.

Disabled American Veterans handed McCain a 20 percent rating two years ago, compared with an 80 percent rating for Democratic nominee Barack Obama, said Joe Violante, Disabled American Veterans' legislative director.
