Deactivated Hurlburt unit coming to Cannon

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — Airmen and officers from a special operations squadron that will fly the tiltrotor CV-22 aircraft will be reassigned to Cannon Air Force Base in eastern New Mexico.

The Air Force Special Operations Command says the 20th Special Operations Squadron, which was deactivated last week at a Florida base, will fly CV-22 aircraft out of Cannon.

A command spokeswoman, Capt. Laura Ropelis, says there’s no timeline for the aircraft to arrive in New Mexico. A military spending bill includes six of the aircraft for Cannon.

The CV-22 is capable of vertical takeoffs and hovering. According to an Air Force fact sheet, it conducts long-range infiltration, exfiltration and resupply missions for special operations forces.
