WACO, Texas — A man was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years in federal prison for a car accident that killed a Fort Hood soldier on the Central Texas Army post.

Ravis Neal Key II, 23, of Killeen was sentenced in federal court in Waco about a month after he pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter in the death of Sgt. Andre M. Araujo, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton said.

U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith Jr. also ordered that Key pay more than $8,000 restitution and be under three years of supervised release after finishing his prison term.

Key was driving more than 75 miles per hour at Fort Hood in late June when he slammed into Araujo’s vehicle, which was stopped at a traffic light, authorities said. It then slid into the intersection where it was hit by a third vehicle and caught fire, authorities said.

Tests revealed the presence of drugs in Key’s blood, including high levels of opiates and amphetamines, authorities said.
