BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A Maine businessman has been charged with paying $1.2 million in bribes over a six-year period to a pair of former officials at the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command in Huntsville.

Authorities said Tuesday they had filed a criminal investigation against 64-year-old Maurice Henry Subilia of Kennebunkport, Maine. He was president and director of Lealagi Inc. and Sage Technologies, two subcontractors on Army contracts.

The alleged payments went to Michael Cantrell and Douglas Ennis, former officials at the Army arsenal, who pleaded guilty nearly a year ago to taking bribes. Both men await sentencing.

The charges against Subilia indicate he made bribery payments of as much as $60,000 each for years. Court records do not show the name of Subilia’s attorney.
