NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Winds have delayed the scheduled launch of the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush from its Newport News shipyard to Norfolk.

Now the Navy and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding are scheduled to attempt the move on Tuesday. The ship’s commissioning is scheduled for Jan. 10 at Norfolk Naval Station.

Tugboats were to begin towing the 1,092-foot ship on Monday but the move was delayed.

In a break from tradition, the carrier will be commissioned before sea trials while the Navy and shipbuilders complete some finishing touches.

The Navy has not designated a homeport for the Bush, and a tug-of-war is emerging between Florida and Virginia.
