Veterans with coronary artery disease and Plavix

What have any of you veterans heard about the VA discontinuing prescribing Plavix?

I was told by my VA provider that my prescription for Plavix (clopidogrel) may not be renewed after I have been on it for a year. It was prescribed for me after I had a stent installed.

I cannot think of another more widespread disorder in aging veterans than coronary artery disease.

2. Plavix is an antiplatelet drug. So is aspirin.

Plavix is still under patent and very expensive. It also tends to cause more bleeding problems than aspirin does.

My best guess is that they're going to up the aspirin therapy to compensate in the slight loss of antiplatelet activity of Plavix over aspirin.

Some people will probably have to move to Coumadin therapy.

People with stents were maintained before Plavix came on the market and they will be again.

Have a long talk with your cardiologist about what therapy is the best for you. Have a long talk with your wallet if you want to stay on the Plavix.
