BANGOR, Wash. — Hearings are set for next month on a Navy plan for dolphins and sea lions to patrol the submarine base at Bangor.

Two years ago Navy officials said they would prepare an environmental impact statement on the proposed Swimmer Interdiction Security System. Hearings on a draft statement are set for Feb. 11 in Silverdale and Feb. 12 in SeaTac.

The draft lists five options for monitoring the four-mile waterfront at the Hood Canal base for the Navy’s largest submarines, including eight carrying nuclear missiles.

The Navy’s preference is for a combination of California sea lions and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Other alternatives are for sea lions only, combat swimmers, remotely operated equipment and no change. A final EIS is expected in late July.
