Guardsman sues employer over promotion

FARGO, N.D. — An Army National Guard member is suing Grand Forks County, saying she was denied a promotion to a juvenile detention officer’s job because of her military duties.

The Justice Department issued a statement saying it filed the lawsuit on behalf of Suzanne Halverson. It alleges violations of the federal law that bars employers from discriminating against members of the military because of past, current or future military service obligations.

The Justice Department said it filed the lawsuit after receiving Halverson’s complaint from the federal Labor Department, which investigated the case.
